I have to say I was relieved to see your post saying you made it. Well done! Looking at the satellite images of northern Greenland, it appeared to me to be a ridiculously difficult and treacherous descent from the ice cap. Mind you, considering the meltdown going on all over the island, it may not even have been possible anywhere else! Rest easy and eat well. You deserve it!

We called ahead and set up a big booter for you to hit on your way down so you can finish in style. When you find it, could you get Devon or Adrian to do a lincoln loop 180 into a switch front for the camera? Seriously well done, enjoy the descent.

Thinking of you!
Cathy Crawley ( United Kingdom )23 Jul 09, 05:44:11

Hi Adrian,
Still following your progress with great interest and awe. It seems quite odd to tune into your blog every fews days and get transported from a familiar busy man-made world to your frozen wonderland. Although I personally wouldn't be up to it, I confess a degree of envy! With the end so near I just wanted to wish you a safe finish - no crevasses, polar bears or broken ribs! - and if it helps, you can happily have our weather too as we seem to have the wind you're missing! Stay healthy and hope to see you when next in the UK. Cathy, Southampton.
Michael Brown ( United Arab Emirates )23 Jul 09, 03:59:09

You three courageous men have and will inspire a love for our planet, a respect for all creatures and hopefully a significant shift. Powerful stuff.

Now, just stay present and come home safe. Love ya, Daryl

captain music ( Canada )22 Jul 09, 13:06:38

No winds? Ok guys, we're here for you. I'm currently assembling an army of the top grade 3 recorder players in canada, to play an epic 24 hr marathon version of my latest [noncommisioned] work, 'Cold Cross Buns Over Greenland'. According to my calculations, if we all join in together, AND point our instruments in the right direction, we could potentially generate enough wind power to guarantee your swift and safe return! [here's the score, for those of you who want to play along at home: B A G, B A G, G G G G, A A A A, B A G.]

Let's bring these boys home!

Rootin' and tootin' for ya!

Love Brooke

Juliet Crowe ( Canada )21 Jul 09, 23:13:49

Go, Daddy, go!

My new favorite book says that daddies are for catching dragonflies. Or crossing Greenland. Hmmm, I'd rather you come home safe and catch dragonflies.

Mom wishes you all a safe and euphoric trek back to comfort and COMPLETION. She says 7-Eleven is featuring tasty Gatorade slushies this summer. Greenland only features thigh swallowing, tasteless, expedition-slowing slushies. Mmmmm.....7-Eleven wins......sorry, no sparerib flavoured limited-time offers for Adrian to daydream about.....
Ann Holbek ( Canada )21 Jul 09, 20:43:09

Hey Dev, I've been following the dot to dot on your expedition map and it looks it looks like the unicorn has almost landed! Looking forward to hearing you are all safe and well. Lots of love Mom XXXXXXXXX
Don and Elizabeth Crowe ( Canada )21 Jul 09, 18:51:24

Derek and team: So close....another day or two of wind and you'd be done. Glad to hear you consider it walkable. Walking will make the last bit much harder, but it may make is safer. A nice gentle slope for 100K from 1600m to sea level would be too much to ask for. Good luck and stay safe.
Mom and Dad

Hey team,
I flew over you a couple of weeks ago and risked getting flattened by my fellow travelers by opening the blinds to peer down and see if I could see you. It was worth the risk, even if you were using the white kites that day. I am keeping you all in my thoughts, so please stay safe and you'll do it. Hey there Adrian and fellow Canadians,

My Irish roots remind of an Irish Prayer you could use right now:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Wishing you safe and successful travels in the days ahead.

The fire dept even had to cut a beginner kite boarder out of the only tree on Rotary beach.
Silly kite boarders...
Sparky Mark Pendergast ( United Arab Emirates )15 Jul 09, 10:32:53

Adrian

Its the radio 2 evening show here we were dicussing your expedition on the show and the fact that you are only eating beef jerky, a handfull of cashew nuts and a marsbar. Did you do your shopping for an Artic expedition in a rush at a 24 hour garage just before you left ?
The Team 15 Jul 09, 15:14:34

Hi Mark,
flattered that your debating our polar diet live to 50 million people on your show and thanks for the concern. Unfortunately the garage was shut when we did our shopping so hence the predicament were in.....

An Emirates flight flew straight over the top of us this morning. Can you broadcast on your show if anyone listening is flying from Dubai to Los Angeles in the next week can they throw down some lasagne, dates and crème caramel?

Many thanks,

Adrian
robin Wiltse ( Canada )15 Jul 09, 10:20:20

Hey brother how are you doing? Sounds like things are getting a little frustrating up there, im sending you all our Kootenay winds, they may smell a bit of patchuli but oh well, we dont need em. We've been out in the boat a bit, cant wait to take you out on the lake. I think Rick has discovered some nudie beaches so bring your binoculars! Talk to you again soon, cant wait untill its in person. Love you, Rob

Brad Stuart ( Canada )14 Jul 09, 18:26:01

Derek,

It seems that you have given me the magical training kite, yes I take it out and magically the wind stops, well hopefully no wind here means that it will pop up in your neck of the woods. Anyway I was just wondering if you and the team are interested in some news from the Tour De France. I figured I would ask first just in case you were looking to watch it untainted when you return from your arctic adventures. Well let me know and here wishing you lots of wind and smooth terrain in the days ahead. Take care, Brad
The Team 20 Jul 09, 16:16:16

Hi Brad,

that'll be great, the only news we've heard in 2 months is some guy called mivhek havm

Keep me informed on the arrival of the little one.

Mary ( United Arab Emirates )14 Jul 09, 09:32:29

Question for all the team. In such an extreme environment how do you manage personal hygiene? Adrian this includes frostbite?

As an expat living in Sharjah it breaks my heart when I walk the dogs every night to see maids hosing down drive ways of villa's and seeing the amount of plastic waste in the bins.

You are all doing a good job to bring about awareness of global warming, please come see us in Sharjah.
The Team 20 Jul 09, 16:11:37

Hi Mary, and thanks for the message.

Personal hygiene is an individual thing and everyone has their own habits. For me, the two things that are important are teeth (brushing once a day is fine) and hands (when I'm cooking to use hand-sanitizer). I'm fine with the rest! - Adrian

Apart from teeth and hand sanitizer, I recommend and use a light sponge bath - using a towel, cup of water and one of our freeze-dried meal bags (Adrian - not the Chili Con Carne!).
-I do this to remove salts, sunscreen and thus reduce chafing and skin abrasions/infections. -Devon

Take care, the team

Sarah Hasek ( Canada )13 Jul 09, 23:24:48

Hi Devon - I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking about you and your team and willing all of the wind in Squamish (that almost blew me off my bike yesterday) to Greenland. (Don't tell the kiteboarders here I said that!)
Safe travels and no more crevasse encounters please.

hi derek and team!

just wanted to let you know that your chat line security is doing a pretty good job. I've written you a couple of other letters, but they didn't seem to make it through the censors. I guess they're filtering out any mentions of 'tinfoil helmets' and they can tell who really is or isn't from Uzbekistan.

Ok, censors, if you can hear me, i'm removing my tinfoil helmet, i'm from canada, and i just want to send my little cousin and friends a smile and some good luck!

Whoa, ipod solitaire and counting tent stitches. Have you guys got to the 'acapella' part of your journey yet? Maybe not everyone knows, but Derek Crowe was a lovely boy soprano in his youth. Devon, Adrian; maybe you could start out with a little "a whim o whey, a whim o whey" and see what he does...

Fingers crossed for you guys. Happy thoughts.
Thinking of you. Slapshot home.

love Brooke
David Bircham ( Canada )13 Jul 09, 11:27:03

Hey Dev
What a journey!!!! Hang in there! and I don't mean literally! Stories of the ground falling away underneath you are disturbing to say the least. Glad you are on firmer ground. Trust your gut! You are so close. We are all rooting for you. Lots of love from Dave, Tanis and Naomi.
Niels Holbek ( Canada )12 Jul 09, 11:55:31

Jan and Tim Koepke ( Canada )11 Jul 09, 20:43:44

Hi Derek and Team,
We're relieved to hear you seem to be out of crevasse country safely and hoping to hear about some awesome winds blowing in the right direction any hour now!! We didn't realize you were up at such high elevations again, so keep warm if you can, with dwindling food supplies I guess hot rums are not in the picture!
We know you can finish the trip as planned with the determination and guts you all have shown, so look forward to the next blog and more good news.
Take care,
Jan and Tim
Daryl Wood ( Canada )11 Jul 09, 20:13:59

Hey Adrian and Canadian boys, I just read that you need some luck with winds from a helpful direction. I've picked up the Wild Boar Talking Sticks which are currently living with me ... and stepping outside into the crisp Canadian night to ask for support from the wind that is blowing over my rooftop from the north at 20 km/hr. Be prepared - there is power in this chant. Love ya, Daryl

Hi Dev ,this is the third try to send you a message, the others didn't seem to get sent. Thank you for the call. I,ve been trying to tell you that you'r grounded! Thinking of you , Lots of love MomXXX
Mark Crowe ( Lesotho )08 Jul 09, 21:47:33

You made it. Yippee.

Derek & Devon, is it just a coincidence or does the route vaguely resemble the shape of a hockey stick. Has Adrian figured out that the crafty canadians are trying to create the world's largest hockey stick in the snow? The shaft of the stick looks a bit crooked. I am assuming this was intentional so as to conceal the true intent of the expedition. I hope you remembered to leave a loonie at the mid point on the ice cap!

On this note, it would seem that the end of your trip is a bit like the lower part of a hockey stick: it is is wider, but the angle is smaller. Point the blade of the stick so it is slightly curved in the direction of Qaanaaq and...slapshot....you're home.
Simone Santos Magalhaes ( Argentina )08 Jul 09, 16:37:36

Devon and the team,
Have followed your progres on your blog - what a trip. Got worried when I read about the historical earthquake (6,1 richter - every 50 years tops) - but found out that is 195km south of Qaanaaq. Could you feel it?
The Team 09 Jul 09, 20:52:23

Hi Torben,

No we didn't feel anything - when did it happen? It did get us thinking if an earthquake occurred nearby whilst were camped in the already jumbled ice at JP Kocks Fjord!

Are you in Denmark early August?

Devon

Really amazing expedition. Very important message you help getting out to the world - we need to be aware of our impact on our world.
Good luck on the last part of your journey.

Sounds like some ride'em cowboy times over the last little bit! I am following your blogs with interest. How does losing the GPS affect the route finding? The -4C is sounding pretty good right now! Great pix. Have a good last leg of the trip. Stay safe.

Hi Cousin D.

Greetings from the South Island!

I got to see your peeps last week. Wow, Juliet is a fully functioning and dangerous machine. Amazing! And the lovely superstar Jane; baby in one hand, bike box in the other. You Yukon kids are inspiring! Uber.

On a similar note, I got to hang out with Uncle Bob, and watch him do the lawn bowl. Bottom of the 9th, bases loaded. Blinded by the whites! The tension, the pressure! I actually kind of enjoyed it. Which might not be a good sign. I'm on the look out for my Bob-isms and Jim-isms. :) But, it was definitely peaceful. Hmmm, maybe too peaceful. Ooookay, maybe I need an ice adventure? Have you guys thought about a musician up there for next time? Do you think one of those kites could tow an old upright piano? You don't have to answer right now, but think about it...

And hey, nice work on the photos, some amazing pics! I can't even imagine your day to day right now. But the pics definitely help.

Ok, wishing you safety and happiness, and a quick return. A ManHug to you.

[It's wonderful to see the impact you've had with this project. All over the world. Even some of the people from Trinidad and Tobago, and Turkmenistan seemed to have been touched. In the head at least. :) ]

Congrats Guys on reaching the North coast at JP Kocks Fjord and having time to have a dip in the ocean !! Only another 800 km to go and we are all rooting for you.

Adrian the Lions destroyed SA in the final test 28-9 which was good to see from our Brit perspective . A classic series in many ways some great flowing rugby but always hard ,competitive and too close to call.

Well done Adrian, Derek and Devon reaching your first objective. Small matter of finding pulks now, 800 or so km more of ice to be negotiated safely and you will be almost home.

Hi Derek, Devon and Adrian. Derek, we are so extremely proud of what you all have achieved. Almost 3000Km.being towed by a kite is truly amazing....and there is more to come.

Hi Adrian, Derek and Devon, it sounds like you had a very challenging day 45 - and the breathtaking view of the mountains must have been a welcome inspiration. Mark Crowe ( Trinidad and Tobago )04 Jul 09, 06:46:44

Derek, It has come to my attention that Devon is a Husqvarna man. My question is if the greenland ice cap melts and the country is taken over by black locust tree thorns, which are a very hard wood, which chain saw/ bruch saw would you have brought with you. Stihl or Husqvarna? By now Derek and Devon must have sorted this one out.

Also, I am sure by now you have probably incorporated your dust crackers into many delightful recipes. Derek, do you have any recipes to share with your brother in Tukamanistan?

Many of us will be suffering from blog withdrawal when this is all done. Thanks for keeping it entertaining and good job with the posts Adrian.

Off to ride the 7 summits tomorrow in 35 degree weather. I will be thinking of your deep freeze when i am in the frying pan tomorrow.

Skye Newnham ( Canada )01 Jul 09, 22:52:33

Hey guys!

Couldn't help but notice the -23 temperature in Greenland tonight. Jane and I can relate in dealing with temperature extremes - we're struggling to stay hydrated and energized in the +30 Kootenays heat. Dairy Queen, paddling the Slocan, and gin and tonics are our best coping mechanisms to date.

It's hard, but we'll soldier on. Keep up the good work!

Hey guys,
I hope this finds you in good spirits with a cup of something hot in your hands. I've been tracking you progress and really enjoying reading your posts. It's truly an incredible feat, something you will remember forever.

The kiting on Benett has been incredible, save for a few ridiculously strong and gusty days that have claimed a few kites and a fair bit of pride.

Looking forward to seeing you back, and on the water!

Take care gents,

Hi Derek! Hope the weather is working out for you. Pretty crazy adventure! I'm a little envious of the cold temps as it is heating up here in K-town and the biking is pretty sweaty. I am working on a pretty sweet biker tan! The lake is warming up nicely though for the post ride dip. Stay Awesome!

It's amazing what you can do in your own home studio today with a digital camera, photoshop and some fake snow. I am particularly impressed by the intricate miniature dolls of Devon, Derek and Adrian with their tiny kites and pulks. This looks to be almost as much work as actually kite-skiing across the Greenland ice cap.

Derek - was that you I saw at the coffee shop the other day wearing the wig?

Keep up the good work!

Since you guys didn't bring books to read, here are a couple of thoughts to ponder:
"Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be,
because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do."..."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
they just make the most of everything that comes their way."

Adrian - just tuned in - shame on me for not doing so before! - what a superb website / adventure / eye opener re: sustainability! Ramsy says hi of course and is telling his friends about you. Keep safe big boy and we look forward to your next visit to London. Genuine question from Ramsy: how cold is it there and how do you go to the loo? (he read about soldiers freezing to death as they tried to do a poo during the second war)? Yours - Snake
The Team 28 Jun 09, 18:43:13

Hi Roy/Ramsy, amd thanks very much for the message.

Re cold, think -26/28 has been the coldest we've had. But as wrote the other day, the sun (when its shining) and wind makes huge differences how it feels. There's a formula for wind chill, i.e. temp v wind speed,, but for simplicity reduce a half to double to the temp for its wind chill effect.

As for toilet arrangements, we don't hang around long enough reading the Sunday pepers to freeze to death....!

Martin Mortensen ( Denmark )24 Jun 09, 22:46:22

Hi Guys, I have been following your expedition - and I am still wondering...
How do you divide the tent / sleeping. 1, 2 or 3 tents ??
+ How are you prepared for major ice-breaks and does something like that happen/what do you plan to do ??

Best regards, M.M.
The Team 25 Jun 09, 09:39:18

Hi Martin,

Re tent we have a long cylindrical tent, with two inner 'tents' either end, both same size and an open part in the middle. We rotate around the tents so never get fed up of each other and get the 'solo' tent every 3 days. We each take turns cooking - which is done in the middle.

As for ice breaks, assume you mean crevasses, for which we have full crevasse rescue gear. Crevasses danger was/is primarily the beginning few days; when we descend to the arctic in a week or so; and when we traverse to Qaanaq at the end. Just a matter of knowing the ground, being careful, and not falling in one!

Thanks for the interest.

Adrian

Roy Dixon ( United Arab Emirates )23 Jun 09, 03:11:06

Hi Adrian
I have given your position to some of the lads in order to look out for you. You asked; "Can we see a Kite from 37000 feet?" Potentially, yes. Practically, not really. It is possible to see a truck on a road, so I guess it is possible to see a kite. your position updates are an aid to a sky search but a lot depends on the trans-Atlantic routing for the day because, like you, we will follow the wind - not to mention the weather, cloud cover etc.
IM training going well -the Terminator is still intact :-) Little Ciara growing fast.
Keep on Blogging. Over and out.

Daisy Kirkaldy ( United Arab Emirates )22 Jun 09, 05:06:22

Hi Adrian,
I just wondered
Which expedition that you have done ( climbed Mount.Everest went to south, north pole)
has been your favourite?

From Daisy
The Team 24 Jun 09, 22:56:15

Hi Daisy and thanks for writing in.
Which was my favorite of the above three? Difficult to answer because they are all so vety different. I think Everest mainly because you can see where your heading unlike the poles and standing on top of the World for 1.5 hrs was amazing. However both poles were very special too. The hardest? The North Pole - by some way...

Thanks again,

Adrian

Since I can't hug (or bite) you today, I slept soundly while Mommy and Poppa doubled the size of your woodpile in the backyard. Construction is starting soon on the M'Clintock summer manor, red tin roof and all.

Still no new cousin for me. I still chatter away to your picture and my all-time favorite bedtime game is waiting for your picture to come up on the website banner.

They also update us with important information such as what equipment you are using and where you where practising for your jouney with your kites. We know that you were praticing in the Dubai and I was wondering was there alot of wind for your practice? Good luck for the rest of the journey !
The Team 24 Jun 09, 22:53:55

I had plenty of wind to practice kites, but not much snow! But after struggling in sand, the ice is a lot easier.....

Devo!
Following this epic is keeping me alive in the office! Jose, myself, and everyone at Tincup will be following closely though! Sounds like an epic that has already produced some great stories – can’t wait to hear them all at the end.
Hopefully the wind keeps/starts howling!
Shred the 'gnar!'

Good luck with the rest.

Good monrning Adrian,
Have you spoted any signs of wildlife or climate change.

BYE

The Team 13 Jun 09, 06:34:44

Hi Cameron,

Re wildlife, we have seen and heard one or two small birds, probably Lapland Longspurs, around our camp many nights. Plus 3 Ivory Gulls.

Re climate change, suggest read our post of Tuesday - science monitoring on the ice. Where we are, 2500 mtrs sitting on top of the ice cap, we cannot see any signs, although it is happening. All of the visible signs of melting are on the coast. Sebastian Mernild will be posting more blogs on climate change in the coming weeks.

Best regards

Adrian

Hi Adrian, Devon & Derek. Great progress to date, well done. Blog is v. interesting, keep it going. Adrian, you gave me url of sat phone but not the number! Deliberate mistake maybe to avoid the personal abuse (sorry, focussed motivators when you start feeling sorry for yourself) when it may be of assistance. Get D to send it to me and I will be on stand by as the alternative to the official touchy feely physiologists when you are need a kick up the ass. Regards Pete

Jim Welsh ( Canada )02 Jun 09, 10:54:24

Hey Guys following the progress. I have spend alot of days waiting for wind it can be frustrating but when it comes together it all pays off. We have taken to tethering out kites with the safety leash attached to the red loop on teh break strap. It kills the kite really well and seems to be the best way to leave it sitting. Just something we figured out this winter. Best of luck
May the four winds blow you safely home

Jhillika Kumar ( United Arab Emirates )05 May 09, 07:09:04

Hi! My name is Jhillika and I am learnimg about Global Warming with Andre. I would like to ask you, how do you think Global Warming relates to the ice caos that are melting in Greenland?
Thanks,
Jhillika
The Team 09 May 09, 00:47:55

Hi Jhillika,

No-where is climate change being noticed more than in the Polar Regions. In the Arctic average surface air temperature north of 60°N has increased by 0.09°C decade, 2-3 times faster than the global average (IPCC, 2004)

Recent research suggests the ice cap is losing 260-300 cubic kilometres of ice per annum. Piece by piece, evidence has accumulated to show that the ice sheet is shrinking at an alarming rate (source: Environmental Defence Fund, Rignot et al, 2008, Mernild et al, 2008).

You can find more information on our website under "Sustainability Quest".

Best regards, Lark Ringsted
Richard Parsons ( United Arab Emirates )04 May 09, 23:00:31

Hi Adrian and Team,
All the best for the new quest, anything that can bring the attention to global leaders of the need for sustainability gets my vote - I just wish the UAE could lead by your example

Fadi Fahem ( United Arab Emirates )03 May 09, 04:29:43

Incredible feat! best of luck to you guys! what kind of training/workout/diet do u go thru to prepare for this kind of venture?
The Team 04 May 09, 04:17:51

Hi Fadi, each of us have our own individual training regimes but the speciality training is kite flying/kite surfing and hauling tires or sleds - which is the best simulation for pulling a sled on the ice. We'll post a blog on diet soon. Thanks Adrian
Andre Diez de Medina anez ( Bolivia )02 May 09, 03:59:07

Hi, I am Andre and I would like to know how will you study the polar ice caps and other stuff? I would also like to know if this is going to help us stop global warming?
The Team 03 May 09, 17:13:42

Hi Andre, see the sustainability quest/scientific monitoring tasks menu to see what were doing - which is all to assist the monitoring programmes of our science advisors. However, the main thrust of our quest is not to highlight that global warming/ice melt is happening, because we know that, but its what/how we do about it......Read on and thanks, Adrian
Ednan Ramicic ( Denmark )01 May 09, 03:52:19

Godapeed guys, idea is one of most incredable i have heard of, how did you decided to to that ....keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Richard Warren ( Australia )01 May 09, 00:54:10

Good luck Adrian, Devon and Derek, its a great quest your on. Question for Sebastian - what is worst and best case scenarios for sea level rises in say the next 20 years? Richard
Richard Warren ( Australia )01 May 09, 00:51:15

Good luck Adrian, Devon and Derek, you all look really capable guys.
I have a question for Sebastian - what is the realistic sea level rise from the Greenland ice melting in the next 20 years?
The Team 14 May 09, 19:15:21

Hi Richard,

At the moment the average global sea level rise is 3 mm per year. By year
2100 IPCC expect the average global rise to be between 19-57 cm, but
latest scientific results indicates values up to 1.9 m.
